Rez Dog Rescue is ALWAYS in need of foster homes! These are some questions that are generally asked when it comes to inquiring about becoming a foster:
- How much will it cost me to foster?: Absolutely nothing. If you are willing to supply a safe place for a Rez Dog animal, then Rez Dog will cover medical expenses and food expenses. However, there is a contract that must be signed that states that all medical care must be first agreed upon by Randy Sperle; as well as all purchases for the animal that Rez Dog Rescue will need to reimburse.
- What type of animal do you have for me to foster?: Rez Dog Rescue gets requests to help mostly dogs and some cats. The dogs in need range in breed, sizes, ages, and genders, it really just depends. If you think that a certain age or size or gender will work best for you, send us an email to [email protected] and let us know. If we currently have an animal that fits that description that is in need of a foster home and we think will be a good match we will let you know, if not we will keep your information in our records and let you know if and when there is an animal in need that fits your description. Or if you are able to foster multiples like a pair or a litter of puppies that is very helpful, even if we don't have the need at the moment we can save your information into our records. RDR is also always in need of foster homes for cats and kittens.
- What if I can only foster for a few days at a time?: Sometimes we need a foster home for an emergency situation that helps us buy an animal more time until a more permanent foster home is available. So even if you can only foster for a few days or a couple weeks that is very helpful. Also, occasionally people that are fosters full time need to go on vacation which means that the animal they are fostering needs a place to stay for a short time, which is perfect for someone that wants to help but cannot commit to something longer than a few days.
- What if I can no longer foster?: If for some reason you are no longer to foster an animal for Rez Dog Rescue we will find a new foster home. We do not want an animal to be placed with someone that cannot properly care for it nor do we want to cause stress for anyone. We do ask that we are given enough time to find a new placement for the animal.
- What do you expect me, as a foster parent, to do with the animal I am fostering?: Being a foster parent to an animal is a very important job. A lot of our animals come to us from pretty awful situations, therefore, most will need extra TLC to ensure that they are highly adoptable when the time comes. To make the animal is highly adoptable they need to be taken care of properly which means ample food and water, love and attention, socialization, regular scheduled vet visits, etc. Any type of training: leash, create and obedience is also desired. Basically treat the foster animal as if it was your own.
- I want to foster but I am afraid I will get too attached.: There is very little in life more rewarding than opening your home and heart to an animal in need. That being said it does hurt to say goodbye to an animal that you have loved as your own. BUT it is so rewarding to know that they are going to a loving family. A family that chose them because they saw the very same amazing qualities in the animal that you see when you look at your foster animal. Although it hurts, the pain lessens with each update or picture of your foster animal enjoying a life that never would have been possible if not for you. Adoption day is always a bitter sweet moment, but when the right match is made you realize it was all worth it. And then, just when you think you have recovered, you open your heart and home again to another needy animal that needs you just as bad, only to repeat the cycle again, BUT it is so worth it because without foster so many animals would die. And what is worse: helpless animals dying OR having a hurt heart all because you loved?
- What if I fall in love with the animal I am fostering and I want to adopt it myself: This is not uncommon as Rez Dog's have a way of stealing the hearts of those who foster them! And if it happens to you, let Randy know ASAP before an application on that animal is approved.
- What if I want to foster but I don't have a fenced yard?: The type of foster home that we look for is usually a home with a fenced yard, but we know that even those without a fenced yard can provide a loving foster home. It really depends on the situation and if the foster family is able to safely exercise the animal enough to make up for not having a fenced yard.
- What if I am fostering an animal and I find someone that wants to adopt it?: All adoptions are done through an application process where background checks are done and references are called. Should the foster family find someone they think would be a good match for the animal they are fostering, their input would be highly considered and they should contact Randy immediately as well as tell the interested person to request an application.
- Do I have a say in who the animal I am fostering goes to?: Your opinion will be taken into consideration. Anyone interested in adopting from Rez Dog Rescue must fill out an application. Once the application is filled out, then a background check is done and references are called. If for some reason a person or persons make it through that and are chosen to adopt an animal and upon meeting it does not seem like it is a right match, the adoption will be called off.
